Dreamweaver, please explain…

Have you ever had a problem, that you cannot for the life of you, solve. No matter how many hours you spend on it, you just don't seem to be getting closer to solving it? These problems usually occur at the most inopportune times, like late at night the day before a major assignment for uni is due.

I was working away in Dreamweaver the other day, when all of a sudden it shut down and would not open again. Believe it or not, I have come across this issue before, just last week in fact. So I thought I knew exactly what the problem was and exactly how to fix it.

When I had the issue last week, I had added an extra '#' to the 'colour:#000;' entry and automatically pressed ctrl+s before I could rectify the situation. The only reason I knew of this issue crashing Dreamweaver is because a work mate had a similar problem months ago and spent the hours needed to find out the problem. After opening the document in notepad and removing the extra character, all was fine and Dreamweaver opened again.

This time was a little different to begin with, as I wasn't aware of adding an unwanted character, but thought maybe it somehow snuck itself in. So I opened the document in notepad and was going through, looking for an abnormality. But could not find one. It was time to turn to my best friend, Google, to try and solve the problem for me. (I have no idea how this world ever survived without Google, but that is a whole other blog altogether) As always Google pulled through with some answers and I also received some helpful twitter posts.

It turns out that my css file had reached a certain random size, which had caused Dreamweaver to crash and would not reopen until I edited the file in notepad and added some random data. After searching some more it seems that if windows reports anything around 8 KB or multiples thereof then it causes this error. How on earth did somebody figure this error out, and just how long did it take them? Click here to read the blog post that saved my sanity.

I have received a trial version of CS4 and am eager to see if this issue still exists. But until then, I hope this blog helps to save someone elses sanity.
