For a couple of years now, we have been running ZoneAlarm Internet Security on all of our workstations here in the office. Back when we started using it, it had quite good reviews and was one of the better software packages on the market, it was quite effective when it came to detecting viruses, malware, spyware etc.
However, as time went by, and more and more updates came out for ZoneAlarm, it started to use more resources and even occasionally slowed down the computers while it was doing its 'thing'.
So I went looking for an alternative, and found that Microsoft were working on a free software package, which was called 'Morro' during its development phase.
Since its release a couple of weeks ago, I decided to give it a try and downloaded it from Microsoft's website.
I was quite impressed by its small size (around 9MB) and how easily and quickly it installed. So far so good…
After the update and system scan, I had a look through the program's interface. It's one of the cleanest and simplest interfaces I've seen yet. When something is wrong, it’s clearly shown by using red text and red buttons, with suggestions on what to do. When all is OK, it’s all green. Simple I know, but definitely effective.

The software doesn't add any browser toolbars (I cannot stand them), desktop gadgets, or additional 'free' applications (also known as bloatware).
I've also noticed it uses a lot less system resources, and haven't noticed any slow-downs as yet. Also the software updates happen silently without needing to be prompted for anything. It's great!
The MSE software is excellent for Windows XP, Windows Vista and the just released Windows 7 operating systems.
I am happy with this application and it's one of the true gems that Microsoft have released, which I do not hesitate to recommend to friends, family and pretty much everyone. So if you are already running some free anti-virus software, I suggest you give this a try. And for those who are paying for an anti-virus solution, I suggest you think about giving Microsoft Security Essentials a try before you renew your next subscription.
I'm such a fan that all my computers at home are now running MSE, and in the office, we haven’t bothered renewing our ZoneAlarm subscription.
