Is Your Website Optimised

Once upon a time (and not that long ago), for many businesses, simply having a website was a virtual guarantee of getting online traffic and inquiries. However, in the increasingly cluttered and competitive world of the internet – with more and more businesses recognising the benefits of an online presence, it is becoming increasingly difficult for business owners to get their websites found. These days, simply having a website - even if it is a great site - is rarely enough.
Search Engine Optimisation is becoming a necessity for any website wanting to increase traffic; however, optimising your site correctly can be a complex exercise, involving the optimisation of many different elements of your site.
Ireckon we ensure that all sites developed by Ireckon Web Design are, as a minimum, Search Engine Friendly. This essentially means that search engines are able to find, navigate and index your websites pages. However, this is a basic starting point, and for many sites – particularly those in competitive areas, further optimisation strategies are often necessary.
There are many different activities that can be used to help optimise, promote and raise the online profile of your website. Listed below are a number of the more important (and relatively easy to implement) factors that can influence how well your site ranks in search results – and hence how many people find, and access you site.
Use the following checklist to evaluate how well your website is optimised.
- Are the page titles optimised with your most important (and relevant) keywords?
- Are the description meta tags (which more often than not appear on search results) compelling and do they encourage searchers to click on your listing?
- Can search engines access all parts of your site via the navigation menu or other internal links?
- Are important words and phrases included in the content of each web page?
- Do you know how many users access your site, and how they find you?
- Does each web page use relevant and optimised heading tags (H1, H2, etc)?
- Do links to other web pages on your site (internal links) use relevant text and descriptions?
- Can you navigate to any page in 3 or less clicks from the home page?
- Does your website have a good number of links to it from other relevant 3rd party websites?
- Do many websites with a page rank of 5 or more link to your site?
- Is your website listed in important directories such as Yahoo Directory & DMOZ.org?
If you answered no or not sure to any of these questions, your website may not be reaching its potential and your competitors may very well be attracting your potential customers.
