Google has recently revised and republished an article entitled - "What's an SEO? Does Google recommend working with companies that offer to make my site Google-friendly?" - As a part of this updated article Google outlines some of the benefits of SEO. The benefits mentioned in the article are:
- Reviewing and providing recommendations on your site content or structure
- Technical advice on website development: for example, hosting, redirects, error pages, use of JavaScript
- Content development
- Managing online business development campaigns
- Keyword research
- SEO training
Google also says "If you're thinking about hiring an SEO, the earlier the better. A great time to hire is when you're considering a site redesign, or planning to launch a new site.... However, a good SEO can also help improve an existing site."
By outlining a range of questions to ask your potential SEO partner, Google offers some guidelines to help website owners in choosing a suitable SEO company or consultant. Here are some questions that they suggest you could ask :
- Can you show me examples of your previous work and share some success stories?
- Do you follow the Google Webmaster Guidelines?
- Do you offer any online marketing services to complement your organic search business?
- What kind of results do you expect to see, and in what timeframe?
- What's your experience in my industry?
- How long have you been in business?
Finally, Google outlines a range of things that you should be wary of. Some unethical SEOs use strategies and techniques which are outside Googles "good practice guidelines" and could actually result in your site being removed from the Google index altogether.
When hiring an SEO agency, it's probably a good idea if you know enough about SEO to ensure that your chosen provider is pursuing the best practices. Google's SEO article is a pretty good place to start.
