How To Become A Web Programmer

Posted by: Blair on 23 Jul 2008 @ 10:19 am Category: Programming and Coding for the Web

I once heard a former employer tell an employee that, at 24, he was too old to become a programmer. He wasn't trying to be mean or anything (at least I don't think he was). He simply thought that to be a successful programmer you need to start at a very early age. I am happy to say that I am living proof that he was wrong. When I started my first programming job, at Ireckon, I was almost 30.

So what do you need to be doing if you are thinking about being a computer programmer? My first advice would always be to write code whenever you have some free time. Although I have only been paid to program for the past four years, really, I have been programming pretty much constantly since I first touched an Apple IIc at the tender age of 10.

While you are sitting at home of an evening, instead of watching repeats of CSI, why not sit down at your computer and construct a web site. See if you can build a small blog tool or a photo gallery. Don't think that you need to re-invent the wheel either. Spend a lot of time trawling through the net and seeing how other programmers have chosen to approach problems. There is probably very little that you can do that has not already been done by someone.

It's not too important what programming language you use. Choose one that you like and that suits your requirements. As long as you understand the concepts behind what you are doing and why you are doing it then you should be able to transfer your skills to any programming language with a minimum of fuss. As an example, I have only ever been formally trained on Java but over the past 20 odd years I have used BASIC, Pascal, Java, C++, C#, VB and many others that I have probably long since forgotten.

If you are hoping to get a job as a programmer then you probably will also need to become familiar with more advanced concepts such as object-orientation. This might not be something that you can just pick up by hacking away in your spare time. The good news is that there is a wealth of books out there that can teach you such concepts in easy to follow tutorials. So grab a couple of books and try the examples and pretty soon you will be coding like a pro.

Happy programming.
